Finn Wolfhard stars as Rivers Cuomo in the new video for Weezer’s version of ‘Take On Me’.

The long-standing American group recently released ‘The Teal Album’, a covers record featuring some – ahem – intriguing choices.

Out now, the record featured Weezer blazing through 80s Scandi-pop belter ‘Take On Me’ by international heart-throbs ‘Take On Me’.

The full video is well worth catching, starring Finn Wolfhard – Calpurnia, Stranger Things – as a young Rivers Cuomo.

Featuring a daydreaming Finn scribbling in his work book, it also features a full-on jam session.

DAVID BOWIE – SPYING THROUGH A KEYHOLE (DEMOS AND UNRELEASED SONGS)

PARLOPHONE SET TO RELEASE 7″ VINYL SINGLES BOX SET OF PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED* DAVID BOWIE RECORDINGS, INCLUDING EARLIEST KNOWN VERSIONS OF SPACE ODDITY.

With 2019 marking 50 years since David Bowie’s first hit, Space Oddity, we are excited to announce that Parlophone is set to release a 7″ vinyl singles box set of nine previously unreleased recordings* from the era during which Space Oddity was first conceived.

The title: Spying Through A Keyhole, is a lyric taken from the previously unknown song: Love All Around, and though most of the other titles are known, these versions have never been officially released until late last year (see footnote). Most of the recordings are solo vocal and acoustic home demo performances, unless otherwise stated.

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

Mother Grey (demo)

This mid-tempo tale of a fledgling son fleeing the nest features multi-tracked vocals, guitars and harmonica from David.

In The Heat Of The Morning (demo)

A well-known early Bowie song but presented here in demo form with final lyrics.

Goodbye 3d (Threepenny) Joe (demo)

A charming demo from 1968.

Love All Around (demo)

A delightful love song from whence the title of this collection came: “I see a pop tune spying through a keyhole from the other room”.

London Bye, Ta-Ta (demo)

An early demo version of the song with completely different lyrics in a couple of the verses compared to those of the later full band versions.

Angel, Angel, Grubby Face (demo version 1)

The first and only previously known demo of this song.

Angel, Angel, Grubby Face (demo version 2)

A later version of the same song with alternative lyrics.

Space Oddity (demo excerpt)

The lyric and arrangement variations lend weight to the theory that this is possibly the first ever recorded demo of one of Bowie’s most famous songs.

Space Oddity (demo – alternative lyrics) (with Hutch)

Originally conceived as a song for a duo to perform, this is the first known version to feature John ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson again with lyric and arrangement variations.

+ – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – + – +

Due to the nature of some of the solo home demos where Bowie accompanied himself on acoustic guitar, the recording quality isn’t always of a usual studio fidelity. This is partly due to David’s enthusiastic strumming hitting the red on a couple of the tracks, along with the limitations of the original recording equipment and tape degradation. However, the historical importance of these songs and the fact that the selections are from an archive of tracks cleared for release by Bowie, overrides this shortcoming.

Spying Through A Keyhole will be limited to a vinyl only release in the spring. However, the recordings may appear in the future on other formats. More details and actual release date to follow from Parlophone.

*FOOTNOTE: Although this will be the first physical release of these tracks, Parlophone did make them available on streaming services for a limited period only in December.

Eagles Have No. 1 Album of All-Time in the U.S.

The Eagles’ greatest hits album has moonwalked past Michael Jackson’s Thriller to become the best-selling album in history. Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 is now certified 38x platinum, while their 1977 album Hotel California is now 26x platinum, making it the third best-selling album of all-time. Tim Fraser-Harding said of the news, “Eagles epitomize everything that is iconic about classic, timeless music – from songwriting, vocals, and harmonies, to musicianship, performance, and never accepting second best. These two albums in particular have been a definitive part of American life, and will continue to be shared by generations to come, just as they have been the soundtrack to so many lives for the last 40 years.”

Aretha Franklin 1942 – 2018

We are very sad to hear the news that the great Aretha Franklin passed away today in Detroit at the age of 76. Aretha was a pillar of Atlantic Records and transformed global culture. From that day in January 1967, when producer Jerry Wexler took her to Muscle Shoals, Alabama and she sat down at the piano to record her first Atlantic record, “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You),” music was never the same. Back then, there was no one who sang that way, who took the roots of gospel and R&B and infused them with that originality, power, fervor, and depth. Her voice was an unparalleled instrument, a vessel of human emotion that touched people to their core. Aretha was always in charge – of the songs she sang and the songs she wrote; how she sang them and how she played them. With Aretha, soul wasn’t a genre; it was feeling that infused everything she did. She transcended musical categorization, bringing her prodigious talent to pop, blues, rock, jazz, and classical music.

In her dozen years with Atlantic, Aretha created a phenomenal body of work that has entered the timeless musical canon. At the same time, her boundary-breaking approach extended far beyond her music. She was a tireless champion of civil rights and social justice, and above all, a global citizen who strived her entire life to erase boundaries of race, culture, gender, and nationality. Her influence on artists across the globe is incalculable and her place in cultural history is undeniable. All of us in the Atlantic and WMG family are deeply proud to be a part of her extraordinary legacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with her friends and family at this very difficult time.

TWENTY ØNE PILØTS RETURN WITH TWO NEW TRACKS “JUMPSUIT” AND “NICO AND THE NINERS” AVAILABLE AT ALL DSPS AND STREAMING SERVICES

“JUMPSUIT” OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO STREAMING NOW MASSIVE WORLD HEADLINE “BANDITO TOUR” ANNOUNCED

Twenty One Pilots have shared two new tracks – “Jumpsuit” & “Nico And The Niners” – which are available today at all DSPs and streaming services. “Jumpsuit” is joined by an official music video, directed by longtime collaborator Andrew Donoho, streaming now on Twenty One Pilots’ YouTube channel. Both tracks will appear on the band’s anticipated new studio album. TRENCH – which follows the GRAMMY Award-winning duo’s 2015 LP, BLURRYFACE, which has sold over 6.5 million copies worldwide – will arrive everywhere October 5th via Fueled By Ramen, with more details to be revealed in the coming months.

Twenty One Pilots, the critically acclaimed duo of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, will celebrate TRENCH with “The Bandito Tour,” a massive headline world tour set to get underway October 16th at Nashville, TN’s Bridgestone Arena. The tour will traverse the U.S. through the fall followed by dates in Australia, Europe and the United Kingdom.

BLURRYFACE – which followed Twenty One Pilots’ Fueled By Ramen debut album, 2013’s RIAA Platinum certified VESSEL – made a stunning chart debut upon its initial release, entering the SoundScan/Billboard 200 at #1. The album also achieved a milestone unrivaled in the digital era, becoming the first album in which every individual song on the album certified Gold, Platinum or multi-Platinum by the RIAA.

BLURRYFACE spawned a series of hit singles, beginning with the 2x RIAA platinum certified “Tear In My Heart” and followed by the #1 sensations, “Ride” and the 7x platinum certified, GRAMMY® Award-winning “Stressed Out.” The latter track – which reached #2 on Billboard’s “Hot 100” – spent three months at #1 at Modern Rock while also topping the charts at CHR/Top 40 and Hot AC. “Stressed Out” was a worldwide breakthrough for Twenty One Pilots, earning gold, platinum, and multi-platinum certifications in countries spanning Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. The “Stressed Out” companion video was an equivalent success, now boasting close to 1.4 billion views at YouTube alone.

“Ride” spent five consecutive weeks atop the charts at Modern Rock radio outlets nationwide – the band’s second #1 single at the format in 2016 – while also ascending to #5 on the overall “Hot 100.” Another global smash, “Ride” is certified 4x platinum by the RIAA with additional platinum carts around the world. In addition, the track’s companion video – directed by Reel Bear Media – has now garnered over 657 million views via Twenty One Pilots’ hugely popular YouTube channel.

“Ride” was then followed by still another world-conquering hit single, “Heathens,” featured on Atlantic Records’ blockbuster SUICIDE SQUAD: THE ALBUM. The 6x RIAA platinum certified single – which received three GRAMMY® Award nominations including “Best Rock Performance” (Tyler Joseph, songwriter) – spent four consecutive weeks at #2 on the “Hot 100” while also topping Billboard’s “Hot Rock Songs” for a record-shattering 28 consecutive weeks and counting. The unprecedented one-two punch of “Ride” and “Heathens” made Billboard history, establishing Twenty One Pilots as only the third rock act with simultaneous top 5 “Hot 100” singles in the chart’s 58-year history, following only the Beatles and Elvis Presley.

“Heathens” — which hit #1 on the iTunes chart in over 60 countries – also rose to #5 in the United Kingdom and the top 10 in over 15 countries, with platinum and multi-platinum certification in Australia, Canada, Italy, and New Zealand. In addition, the “Heathens” companion video received the 2016 MTV Video Music Award for “Best Rock Video” and has now earned more than 1 billion individual views via YouTube alone.

2017 saw the release of yet another BLURRYFACE hit in “Heavydirtysoul.” Like its predecessor, the RIAA platinum certified single’s companion video received the 2017 MTV Video Music Award for “Best Rock Video” with views now exceeding 84 million via YouTube.

Twenty One Pilots received a number of major awards and nominations over recent years, with “Stressed Out” earning them the 2017 GRAMMY® Award for “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance” alongside four additional nods. Other honors include seven total Billboard Music Awards including 2016’s “Top Rock Artist” and “Top Rock Album” (for BLURRYFACE) and 2017’s “Chart Achievement Award,” “Top Duo/Group,” “Top Radio Songs Artist,” “Top Rock Artist,” and “Top Rock Song” (for “Heathens”); multiple Alternative Press Music Awards including “Album of the Year Presented By Journeys” (for BLURRYFACE), “Artist of the Year Presented By Monster Energy,” and “Most Dedicated Fans”; 2016 American Music Awards for “Favorite Alternative Artist” and “Favorite Pop/Rock/Band/Duo/Group”; six iHeart Radio Music Awards (including “Alternative Rock Song of the Year” in both 2016 and 2017); 2016’s Kerrang! Award for “Best Fanbase,” and two MTV Europe Music Awards.

The Academic have been on a meteoric rise since the release of their full-length debut album ‘Tales from the Backseat’– the record instantly shot to #1 in their Irish album charts, earning raves everywhere from The Irish Times, Salon, Uproxx, V Magazine, Clash Music, Hotpress + more, and the band just confirmed an opening slot for their musical heroes, The Rolling Stones, at Dublin’s legendary Croke Park on May 17.
